Thomas Humann takes us back and forth through diverse locations around the globe, each of which he knows intimately well enough to create vivid scenes. His compelling characters aren't the flat, 2-dimensional ones you meet in a lot of thrillers; his "good guys" have weak points and his "bad guys" have at least some justification, however flawed, for their actions. The Carnival Diversion is an expertly told tale that leaves the reader wanting more.
The Carnival Diversion is an extremely detailed, fast paced thriller that forces the reader to stop and consider the real world possibility of such a threat to the President and the United States. First hand knowledge and experience comes out in the adventures of main character JD Simon as he travels to foreign and exotic lands, engages in deadly combat and is challenged with physical and psychological combat throughout. This is a top recommendation.
With the incredible detail provided by first hand experience at the described destinations, that had me on the edge of my seat seeing what was coming next. I literally spent an entire evening reading this from cover to cover as I was so entralled with what was going on, I feared that I would not remember all the details had I wanted to put the book down and start up later. I am anxiously awaiting Mr.Humann's next book.
Most authors have a story to tell, oftentimes that story impacts their life and views, not the readers'. The Carnival Diversion also tells a story, but the story line seems to impact both the authors' and readers' lives. The personal experiences of the major characters bring a level of realism to fictional accounts of political intrigue. The reader feels part of the action and the detail explainations of the security measures established to provide protection to the President and First Lady are first rate. I have become a fan of the authors' work and look forward with anticipation to the future activities of J. D. Simon..
The Carnival Diversion is excellent, period. Unlike other action/thriller novels that often feel like the works of clever military historians who wish they 'had been there', the visceral quality of Humann's writing gives you the distinct sense he actually lived a lot of this story during his years as a Marine officer tasked with protecting the U.S. president. The writing is tight and the pace quick, perfect matches to an action-packed plot line filled with clever twists. From start to finish, the reader is able to live inside protagonist Captain J.D. Simon's mind. You see what Simon sees, hears what he hears, and experience the gut-wrenching decisions made by a Marine of modest upbringing driven by ambition, duty, and the discovery of an assassination plot leading straight to Oval Office. The Carnival Diversion is an excellent debut from a new and enormously talented writer. Highly recommended.
